Once there were a tortoise and a hare in a jungle. The hare usually mocked at tortoise regarding his slow pace. It often teased him by saying that he was slower than him. The tortoise felt sad and disheartened. When the limit was crossed, the tortoise challenged him for the race that was decided the very next morning at 10.00 am. The next morning, both tortoise and have arrived at the decided place. The jackal was appointed as the referee of the race. The destination was decided.

On the correct time, the referee blew the whistle and the race started. The hare started hopping with vigour and ran fast with enthusiasm. But the tortoise walked slowly. After some time on the midway, the hare stopped and looked behind. He found the tortoise nowhere. Since hare was overconfident, he thought to take some rest under the tree. He sat down there and he fell asleep. But the tortoise kept on walking slowly and gradually. After some time he passed in the vicinity of the rabbit slowly and silently after a long hour, the hare awoke. He was disturbed to find that he had gotten asleep. He started running fast. But as he was approaching the destination point, he found that the tortoise had already reached there. He felt ashamed and apologized to the tortoise and promised him not to mock at him again.

Explanation:

Example: I worked out at the gym for the first time in years. However, I think I overdid it because I’m really sore. After I recover, I’ll try starting with lighter exercises next time and gradually build up from there—slow and steady wins the race.

Synonyms / Related Phrases:

Tortoise and the hare, slow and steady wins the race.

Origin:

As the saying goes, slow and steady wins the race, but where does this term come from? The origin is believed to be from one of Aesop’s fables. Aesop was a Greek fabulist, and it’s believed that he lived around the time of 620 to 560 B.C.E. He wrote numerous fables that are known collectively as Aesop’s Fables.

One of the stories credited to his name is one that you’ve probably heard before—The Tortoise and the Hare. In this story, a hare makes fun of a tortoise for being slow. The tortoise then challenges the hare to a race. Amused by the idea, the hare accepts. He believes there is no way he could possibly lose to a slow turtle. With the course set and ready to go, the race begins and the hare quickly darts down the path, leaving his fellow green contender in the dust.
