It is a city of canals,The Jhelum
flows right through the heart of the city,It cuts Srinagar into two
parts,that are joined together by
seven long bridges of strange de
-sign .What a pleasure it is to move down the Jhelum under
these seven bridges in those light,lovely& comfortable boats called Shikaras! These
Shikaras are of different shapes & sizes..
Near Srinagar is the famous
Dal Lake,one of the most beauti
-ful lakes in the world.Its 8km & 4km wide.It is fed by springs.Its
clear as glass.
On the Dal Lake are the 'floa-
ting gardens'. There are many of
these floating gardens,and they
can be moved from one part of the lake to another.Tomatoes,me
-lons and other vegetables grow
on these floating gardens.
We can also see on the Dal
Lake a large number of house
boats,These flat-bottomed boats
of different shapes and sizes are
let out to visitors,They contain ro
-oms fully furnished with every
thing for our comfort.They also
carry servants and kitchens.Life
in a houseboat on the lakes and
rivers of Jammu and Kashmir is
wonderful.The distant mountains
and beautiful scenery are with us
all the time.
