Answer:

On the basis of your understanding of the story, tick the suitable answer.

1. a. iii. Expected it to be ferocious.

b. ii. Gentle.

c. iii. Make friends.

Answer the following questions.

2. What were the names that were considered for the puppy? What does

Attila mean?

Ans. Tiger, Caesar, Fire and Thunder were the different names considered

for the puppy. Attila , which they settled on finally was the name of the

fifth century fierce warrior and king of the horse-riding Huns, famous for

harassing the Roman Empire .

3. But as time passed our Attila showed a love of humanity which was

sometimes upsetting.

a. How did Attila express his love?

A. Attila expressed his love by running towards any stranger and then

cowering before them, lowering his head, rolling his eyes, tucking his tail

between his legs and moaning, until they petted and stroked him.

b. Why was it upsetting?

Ans. Attila’s behaviour towards strangers was upsetting because Attila’s

love of humanity made him a very poor guard dog. Instead of being fierce

to the strangers he warmly welcomed every one . He was neither giving an

impression of violence which was expected from a guard dog.

c. What is the tone of the writer?

Ans. The tone of the writer is humorous. The writer intends to say that

though Attila had a forbidding appearance he was so kind at heart that the

expected level of bravery and ferociousness was not evidently seen.

4. What was the mother’s opinion of Attila? Was she right in her criticism?

Give reasons for your answer.

Ans. The mother had a low opinion of Attila. She complained that two

watchmen could be employed for the cost of his meat and rice. She felt

annoyed that someone was stealing flowers from their garden every

morning but Attila never barked or alerted them to the presence of

intruders. In this regard, I think her opinion of Attila was justified.

5. Why was Ranga annoyed with Attila?

Ans. Ranga was annoyed with Attila because the dog followed him around

constantly and would not let him out of his sight. Ranga was such a person

who led a free life attaching no importance to companionship. Hence he felt

it as a nuisance when the dog followed him and stick to him wherever he

went.

6. How did the family members react to Attila’s disappearance?

Ans. Attila’s disappearance caused a commotion in the family. The mother

felt that he should have been locked up, and his departure, probably with

the burglar, was an embarrassment to the family. The youngest child

however felt that he had probably gone off on his own. For him if Attila

would have been there no thief would come. But all others were thankful to

the thief for taking the dog away and considered his disappearance as a

boon.

7. Attila fooled everybody by way of good fortune rather than by his

abilities as a guard dog. Justify.

Attila became a hero when he was spotted following Ranga on the road by

the eldest son. He accidentally tripped Ranga over, which led to his

capture. It can certainly be said that he fooled the family by his

good fortune rather than his abilities as a guard dog, because he

never at any point made any attempt to prevent the burglary, and

rather than showing the ferocity of a guard dog, he had attached

himself to the burglar with love and devotion.

8. Notice that in the story the narrator never comments as to

whether Attila’s actions are good or bad. The narrator remains

unbiased throughout the story. He just relays the facts to the

reader. Do you think that Attila is a good dog to have at home?

Give reasons.

Ans : [Sample Answer]

Yes, I think Attila is a good dog to have at home. While there is no denying

that he is of no use as a guard dog, he is an affectionate and friendly pet

who clearly brings a lot of joy to the younger members of the household.

There is never any fear that he will suddenly turn ferocious or bite anyone,

and he can be counted on for love, affection and companionship. From that

perspective, he is a good dog.

9. Do you think Attila deserves the status of a hero? Give reasons.

Ans: [Sample Answer]

I do feel that Attila deserves the status of a hero. While Attila did not

deliberately contribute to Ranga’s capture, it could not have happened

without him. The only reason the elder son caught Ranga was because he

was chasing Attila, who was chasing Ranga, and because the thief tripped

over Attila. By that logic, the capture of the thief and the recovery of the

stolen goods would not have been possible without Attila. Hence, he

deserves the status of a hero.
