Answer:

First off, let’s hope the student showed some signs of lightheadedness/dizziness and was taken to the nurse before fainting.

However, if a student faints in class, the teacher should:

  1. Not panic.
  2. Send another student to get the school nurse or call for the nurse if there is a phone in the classroom.
  3. Move other students away. “Ok, let’s give him some room…”
  4. Ascertain that the student is breathing. If not, immediately begin CPR (all teachers are, or should be, trained in CPR and other First Responder techniques).
  5. Without moving the victim, check to see if he/she injured him/herself in collapsing (look for head wounds, limbs at an odd angle, etc.
  6. Treat for Shock.
  7. Wait for qualified medical help.
  8. If the student begins to awaken before the nurse or other qualified help arrives, keep the student on the floor (assuming the student collapsed on the floor) or in a seated position (if that’s where they ended up) until help arrives.
  9. Don’t move the victim - you don’t know if they’ve hurt themselves in the faint/collapse and you could further exacerbate the injury. Also, in this increasingly litigious society (i.e. lawsuits), you must do only what you are qualified to do unless heroic measures are necessary - i.e. the room is on fire and you have to get the kids OUT including the fainted student.
