I have had a number of difficult people in my life. One thing I learned is that I can't change people. Any amount of thought, energy, ruminations that go towards that are wasted energy, even as they try to draw you in, more and more. Whatever people say, take it with a grain of salt (observe actions, don't believe in words). That being said, he can be going through something difficult, worries about mortality, about finances, his health, the future, what he accomplished and wanted and didn't accomplish.

Sometimes heart disease can cause depression. Sometimes cancer or other diseases can start with symptoms like night sweats.

As his child you can express concern and ask if he has had a full medical check-up this year and encourage him as you care about him and his health and don't want to worry about him.

Try to take care of yourself and your life so he doesn't have to worry about you and repeat some of the simple positive things about how things are going that often get unsaid, (you are looking forward to college, you appreciate all he has done to provide for his family, etc).

Oh, and another thing I realized from sometimes people I did like, but was irritable in emotion towards them was not the person themselves, so much, but the problems, responsibilities, worries or work they represented to me.

That it then helped me realize, say, how maybe the same was true of others, they liked "me" but did not like the worries, or responsibilities, or maybe finances, or work I represented to them. (my father in particular)

That insight helped me not have hard feelings about it.
