Narrator 2: Good Morning to all present. Today we are here to present before you a skit on the topic ‘River as a lifeline for Civilizations’. We hope that through our skit, we will be able to make you understand the importance of rivers.
Narrator 1: Lifeline means a support or substance without which one cannot survive. So, it is rightly said that rivers are a lifeline. In this skit, we will tell you how rivers give us the vital support which is needed to sustain and develop life forms.
Narrator 2: We all know that we are dependent on rivers in many ways. Since 70% of the Indians live in rural areas, our skit will concentrate on how rivers are the backbone of the rural society.
(Introduction)
Narrator 1: Let us now travel through the village of Antarvedi which is located on the eastern coast of Deccan Peninsula, on the banks of River Godavari. As the village is located near the sea, the main activities carried out here are farming and fishing, along with other rural activities.(Traveller enters)
Narrator 2: She is a traveller who is first time visiting this place and is accompanied by her relative.
Traveller: What a beautiful village this is, I must say. How come this river is so clean from pollutants though it is in its last stage?
Relative: What do you mean to say?
Traveller: I mean to say that in cities, the river becomes dirty only after traveling a few miles, but here the river drains into the sea but still the water is so fresh.
Relative: This River is coming from the Brahmagiri Mountains in the west and is clean due to the combined efforts of the villagers and the Government. Since our existence depends upon the water of the river, therefore all the villages through which this river crosses have supported each other to keep the river clean.
Traveller: How much do the villagers depend upon this river? I want to see.
Relative: Come; let us have a tour across the river.
Scene 3(Farmer)
Narrator 1: As our traveller will explore the village, we will come to know about how people are dependent on rivers, directly or indirectly.(Farmer with Persian wheel)
Traveller: I must agree that the villagers have quite well maintained the rivers. I have also heard that the Godavari River is the largest peninsular river in India.
Relative: Not only the largest but our river is the second oldest river in India. Oh! Look there, a farmer.
Traveller: Who is he and what the machine with him is?
Farmer: You seem new to the village. I am Shyam, the richest farmer of this village and this is my Persian wheel.
Relative: This is the Persian wheel and we have only two of this kind in our village. It is used to draw water out of the river and to transport it to the various parts of the farm. Those farmers who are not so rich have to manually draw water out of the well in order to irrigate the fields.
Traveller: Why to do so much of hard work, can’t all the farmers rely on the rainfall?
Farmer: You only rely on the uncertain rainfall which only comes once in a year. If we only rely on rainfall, the season of the crops will pass away in waiting for the rain and then not only us, but all the people in the cities will die starving.
(Farmer goes)
Relative: Think of this world if there had been no rivers, then we would have no water for irrigation and without rivers, all the rainwater would accumulate on the land, and so the low-lying areas will get flooded.
Narrator 1: So here we have learned the importance of a river in the field of agriculture. River brings fresh water to many parts of the state for irrigation and they are also the part of the hydrological cycle, which means that without rivers, the rainwater would gather in the valleys and low plains, creating a flood-like situation and on the other hand where rain comes once in a year, there will be drought like situation for most of the year.
Narrator 2: So, we can say that rivers help to distribute the water which is essential for the survival of the mankind. Now, they both move on.
(Narrations all)
P1: Till now, we have studied that without rivers, there could have been floods and droughts, food shortage, decline in freshwater fishes and no salt. Before finishing our skit, we would like to raise our concern that rivers had got polluted since the last two decades.
P6: And so the River Godavari was nearly restored to its original state. We here end our skit.
Traveller: Yes, I know. River carries a small amount of salt and when it reached the ocean, the salt accumulates and over years it makes the ocean salty.
Relative: Think if rivers would not be there, then how would we get salt? Though you may think that salt is merely necessary to life, but salt is required by our body and it has a long history too.
