Without a doubt, I think the statement or “slogan” of Gandhi’s which is most often quoted is this: “Be the change you wish to see in the world.” However, scholars question whether he actually said this or not, and most believe that he did not.

By slogan, if you mean political rallying cries then I am not aware of many of those that came out of Gandhi’s three major movements. The non-cooperation movement of 1919 was about rejecting everything British, from the foreign made goods to taxes. The 1931 Salt Satyagraha was about asserting control and by defying an unjust law successfully, Gandhi was able to tell the British that he was in control of the masses. During the Quit India movement of 1942 Gandhi did give a slogan of “Do or Die” although it is debatable whether it was he who coined it or the Congress working committee was responsible.

Gandhi believed in leading by example. His presence was his slogan. His character was his slogan. His commitment to the ideology of non-violence was his slogan. People followed him because he inspired confidence in them by the way he spoke directly to their immediate concerns while at the same time exhorting them to achieve a higher goal.
