Taking care of the health of children falling ill after consuming junk food, the government agency has proposed to ban its sale and advertisement in and around schools.

Food regulator FSSAI has asked to ban the sale and advertisement of 'junk food' within 50 meters of school canteens and school boundaries. Its aim is to provide safe and nutritious food for children. The FSSAI on Tuesday released the draft manual titled 'Food Security and Standards (Safe Food and Healthy Diet for School Children) Regulations, 2019'. On this, people have been asked to give their suggestions within 30 days.

The regulator has proposed that food items which are high in Faces, Salt and Sugar (HFSS) cannot be sold to school children within 50 meters of school canteen or mess premises or hostel kitchen or school premises .

Companies or traders (FBOs) dealing in food items high in fat, salt and sugar will be prohibited from advertising such food within 50 meters of school premises or school premises.

In June this year, FSSAI CEO Pawan Kumar Agarwal announced that he would propose a ban on advertisements of unhealthy food in and around the school.

According to the proposed rules, school authorities will have to implement a program to promote safe and nutritious food.
