Pollution in Delhi

My heartfelt greetings to one and all gathered here. Today, I, Aarohi Srikant, would like to express my views on the topic - Pollution in Delhi.

It is very unfortunate to see that the Capital city of our nation is the most polluted capital city. The Air Quality Index (AQI) in Delhi is deteriorating day by day. It is mainly due to exhaust from vehicles and factories that release harmful emissions into the air.

Specifically, the particulate matter leads to the degradation of the air quality. The Government has launched various programs and schemes to control pollution in Delhi. In addition to that, it is very vital that the individuals take some measures from their end.

Delhi, the capital city of our nation, should ideally be the pride of the country, but instead, historic Delhi is making history of the wrong sorts.

Good morning everyone!

Let me acquaint you with today's Delhi.  The city that should be known for its breathtaking monuments like the Red Fort, Quran Minar and the Lotus Temple, unfortunately is instead making people breathless because of high air pollution levels.

Ranked amongst the top 10 polluted cities worldwide, Delhi has an extremely poor air quality index. The number of people suffering from health issues due to air pollution is increasing exponentially. Young children, adults, senior citizens- each age group is being affected adversely. The manifestations range from mild colds and runny noses to chronic bronchitis, asthma and lung infections.

Studies have revealed vehicles, dust and industries as the main sources of pollution. Most of us feel that we are the victims of pollution, but do we ever realise that we are also the ones triggering it? While the common man may not be able to do much to reduce the presence of dust and industrial waste in the air, we can definitely do something about the vehicular emissions.

We need to prioritise the environment. If we need to get something from the nearby market, we need  to consciously decide to go walking or cycle down. Most of us and our family members are guilty of driving to the market simply because we are too lazy to walk and it is convenient to drive instead. Also we supposedly "social" beings find it demeaning to tie up with others and promote carpooling. These are just a few things that we can do to reduce air pollution. The main challenge lies in taking action.

Though  each one of us may not be living in Delhi but we can at least promote an environmentally friendly mindset. Given how trends catch on and spread really fast on social media, chances are that people in Delhi will also wake up and try their best to reduce air pollution. Small steps can go a long way in making a difference; so no matter which part of the country we are in, let us take a small step today.
