Our Environment is an essential part of our life. It is the source for us to live and to do any of our actions such as eating, playing, working, enjoying, walking, breathing, hearing and drinking. Environment is our surroundings that includes water, air, locality, trees, lands, mountains, living organisms like animals, birds and insects, natural resources like minerals, fuels etc. Quality of our life depends undoubtedly on the quality of our environment.
Long ago, people could live according to principles dictated by environment in a way that is harmless to the environment. Nowadays we are harming and degrading the environment and indirectly harming ourselves – physically and biologically. Also the ecological system or ecosystem is affected. The balance and recycling phenomena of ecosystem are tampered with.
Power of technology and science enabled exploitation of environment for selfish and indiscriminate uses resulting in the following:
1. Deforestation
2. Depletion of water under surface of earth
3. Extinction of some species, Loss of biodiversity
4. Air pollution (greenhouse gases), drinking water pollution,
river pollution by mixing poisonous chemicals
5. Global warming
6. Depletion of ozone layer
7. Depletion of oil and gas reserves and natural resources like minerals.
As we know the causes, the steps to take protective measures are obvious. Save trees, save water, save fuels, use fuel wisely, invent green technologies and spread awareness among people. Educate others on the serious consequences. Stop pollution of air and water bodies. Stop production of harmful plastics and polythenes. Population control is also needed as reduction in population reduces the depletion of resources.
We have to adapt to the environment instead of adapting the environment to our selfish needs. We have to follow regenerative and recycling mechanisms. We need to use resources in a discriminate manner. Otherwise, existence of humanity will become a question. People will suffer with a lot of diseases. Famines and cyclones will become more frequent. Rains will become very untimely and damaging instead of helping agriculture.
Action related to environment needs to be done together by governments of various countries and the United Nations Organization, at a global level. Long term planning and monitoring of actions of private corporations is needed.
