After thousands of years of foreign invasion of Mughals, Persians, and British, India finally got its independence on 15th August 1947. Thousands of freedom fighters sacrificed their lives in the Indian freedom struggle. They have gone through unbearable pain and agony so that we, the next generation can breathe in a free country.
On 15th August 1947 British India was divided into two British dominions India and Pakistan. India was created for people who wanted to call it their country and Pakistan was made for people of Muslim faith and who wanted a separate country for them. Though we got independence we were not a republic nation, still, George VI was India’s head of state of constitutional monarchy and Earl Mountbatten was the Governor General.
To formally get recognized as a republic nation, we needed to have a fully functional constitution. This mammoth responsivity was given one of the most educated heroes of that time, none other than Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar. A drafting committee was formed of various expert and Dr. Ambedkar was the chairman of the committee.
It was not an easy task for constitution drafting committee as in India we have dozens of languages, half dozens of faith. It took more than 2 years to complete the first draft. the first draft on the constitution was adopted by constituent assembly on 26th November 1949 and it came into effect on 26 January 1950. On 26 January 1950 India became a republic nation and that is why we celebrate republic day on 26th January every year.
Independence day and republic day are national holidays in India. A lot of programs, parades are arranged across the country. Different people celebrate it in a different fashion, some participate in school or government departments flag hoisting program. Some local groups play patriotic songs over the loudspeaker.
Social communities or NGOs arrange activities like tree plantation, cleaning drives etc. The overall atmosphere looks joyful, people don tricolor on vehicles, buildings, decorate offices with tricolor themes. Some schools arrange essay, speech, painting competition etc.
TV and movie channel, youtube creators play patriotic themed content, contests, advertisements etc. In urban areas, you might find YouTubers performing republic day related social experiments.
Nowadays, youth are participating more in such programs that is a very good side, but along with it we need to know more about our country, it’s history. Everyone should learn the constitution of India, it will help us know our constitutional rights and duties. This will equip us to fight for our rights and also respect others rights.

Good morning to one and all present here. Myself Shagun Singh of class 11th is standing before you all to deliver a speech on Republic Day. As we all are gathered here to celebrate Republic Day, let's get to know something about this divine day.
Republic day is one of the biggest occasion celebrated in our country. Today we all are here to celebrate our 69th Republic day. We celebrate Republic day every 26th January. As you all must be knowing that we celebrate Independence day on 15th August because on this day we got freedom. Same is with Republic day, there is a reason behind celebrating it.
On 26th January, 1950 the constitution of India came into existence. What does republic mean ? Republic simply means a country where the leaders are selected by people and they choose their representatives and the main power remains in the hand of common people.
Republic day is celebrated with utmost arrangements and happiness. In New Delhi, every Republic day, the prime minister hoist the flag in presence of a foreign chief guest resembling "Atithi Devo Bhava". Army, police, students take part into the parade showing their different customs and traditions.
This day is only possible because of the sacrifices made by great freedom fighters and in order to let this not go wasted, we should take a oath not to support any crime or any type of corruption and should do our best for our country. Thank you and have a nice day.
