Dr. S. Radhakrishnan

‘When we think,

We learn,

We cease to know’

Good morning, today, I _____________ of class _____ , am going to express my views on the topic ‘Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, a great Indian philosopher, teacher and President of India.’

Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was a great person. He was born on 5th September, 1888 in Thiruttani near the borders of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. His father's name was Sarvepalli Veeraswami and his mother's name was Sitamma. At the age of 16, he was married to his cousin Sivakamu and had one son and five daughters. His primary education was at K.V High School at Thiruttani and then he moved to the Hermansburg Evangelical Lutheran Mission School in Tirupati. He was even awarded many scholarships, for he was a great man. Being a teacher, he inspired most of the students. Whenever he called his pupils at his home, after teaching them, he used to serve them with a cup of tea with his own hands. Such an ideal teacher he was! Since 1962, his birthday has been celebrated as Teachers’ day. He was also the 2nd President of Independent India and was succeeded by Zakir Hussain. He received Bharat Ratna, the highest award of our nation. Also, he got Knighthood from British. He is an inspiration for youth of India.

This ideal man is fondly remembered by all. And in order to pay tribute to him, 5th September is celebrated as teachers’ day all over the world where students thank their teachers and express their love and gratitude for them.

Thankyou!

As we celebrate our Teacher's day the first act we do is to remember with a great respect (sir) Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan.  He was our 2nd President and our 1st vice-president in the free Republic of India.  He was awarded the highest titles like the knighthood, Bharat Ratna and honorary membership of British Royal Order of Merit.

Dr Radhakrishnan is a model for a student from a not-rich family rising to academic heights and further to heading the state.  He was one of the few Indians due to whom the West had given respect India, Hindu religion and Indian culture.  Looking merely at his intelligent and radiant face in the photo, you will be drawn the respect.  Aren't you?

He was a brilliant student receiving scholarships all the time.  He was the most distinguished alumni passing the post graduation in Philosophy from Madras.  His thesis on Ethics in Vedanta was praised by British professors.  That was a fitting reply to the misconceptions about Hindus in the minds of the English.

He was a great political statesman, philosopher, gentleman and world renowned academic scholar in the 20th century.  He worked as a bridge between India and the West by developing understanding and clearing misunderstandings about India in the Western minds.  While Gandhiji and others influenced the British with non-violence and Satyagraha, he overpowered them with his intelligence, knowledge and power of speech.

I think you will all agree with me that it is very apt to reiterate some of his famous sayings and see how they apply to us.

On this day I am sure we all wish our respected teachers to follow his good saying “The true teachers are those who help us think for ourselves.”  It is important for all of us to be constantly learning in this 21st century, rightly as he said “When we think we know we cease to learn”.  This reminds us of Einstein’s words “Everything I know is but a drop in the ocean of knowledge.”

His simple statement of “Religion is behavior and not mere belief” tells us clearly the meaning of religion to all of us and clears our misconceptions about religion.  “The self (Soul) is the constant-witness consciousness”, tells us our inner self watches us all the time.  However, we try to override it and do incorrect things.

We have seen a lot of fantastic achievements and scams in the recent times.  Well summarized by Dr Radhakrishnan in “Man is a paradoxical being-the constant glory and scandal of this world.”  Let us hope to be on the side of glory in our future.

There are many more greats about Dr Radhakrishnan.  Knowing about Dr Radhakrishnan, I am now positively enlightened.  I realize that with effort and application we can rise to the top.  I am grateful to God that Dr Radhakrishnan was born in India and made us all proud in the world.

==================
Add these paragraphs too if time permits.

He was born on 5th Sep, 1888 to Andhra Telugu parents.

Radhakrishnan worked as professor of Philosophy in Mysore University.  Dr Radhakrishnan was even nominated for the Nobel Prize in literature.  He served as vice-chancellor of Andhra University and Benaras Hindu University.

He rose to higher positions steadily.   After representing India at UNESCO, he became the ambassador to USSR.  He was also part of the Constituent Assembly of India that had drafted  our constitution.

At the age of 16, he married his cousin Sivakamu and had five daughters and a son.  Do you know the dignified cricketer VVS Laxman is his great grandnephew?  He contributed to charity too.  He authored a book "An Idealist View of Life" on intuition, intellect, religion and experience.

He died on 17th Apr, 1975.
