KOCHI: With crime against women and children increasing in the district, schools in the city have come out with methods to help girls to become more self-reliant.
At Vidyodaya School in Thevakkal, girl students from Classes I to XII are given compulsory training in self-defence for 45 minutes every month.
Meanwhile, awareness classes are given for boys regarding the need to respect women and ensuring that her rights are not violated. This is besides making them aware of the existing laws and rules that protect women.
This is not a one off scene. Schools in the city help to prepare a gender sensitization module to help students' battle stereotypes against women from a young age. While in some schools, girls are encouraged to learn karate, judo, kalari and taekwondo, in many schools yoga has been introduced as a compulsory subject as it helps to bring in "more resistance and emotional control" amongst students of all ages.
Yoga can improve students' concentration.
"We want to ensure that girls are ready to fight any atrocity. Also boys need to respect woman from a young age," said Vidyodaya School principal Esther Agnes.
Even at Nava Nirman Public School, Vazhakala, girls are being encouraged to learn karate. Recently some of the students were sent for a self-defence class organized by the Thrikkakara police.
"We don't want to take any chances. To prevent any untoward incident in the campus, we have a special team of teachers who ensures that the girl students gather in a room in the school, instead of going directly to their classroom. They will only disperse to their respective classes once all the school buses reach the campus," said principal Lizy Sabu.
