SPEECH ON THE OCCASION OF GANDHI JAYANTI

A hearty good morning to everyone in attendance. Today, October 2, 2022, is the second day of the month. Today we gather to commemorate the 153rd birthday of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, the Father of Our Nation, commonly referred to as Bapu. Bapu was an Indian lawyer, anti-colonial nationalist, and political ethicist who led the successful campaign for India's independence from British rule through nonviolent resistance. Gandhi was captivated by justice and truth from a young age. He was a pivotal figure in India's independence. He toured India, hosting campaigns to alleviate poverty, expand women's rights, end untouchability, and achieve Swaraj, or self-rule. We've all heard a lot about Gandhi, but do you know why we celebrate him? We commemorate his birthday to remember his teachings on Ahimsa, Swaraj, and Satyagraha. People appear to have forgotten the path of Ahimsa and Satyagraha as time passes. To remember his invaluable teachings every year his birthday is celebrated to remember his contribution to our Nation, India.
