Maybe we were the ones to close the door in someone else’s face. Someone walks away without so much as a backward glance. Goodbyes can be filled with love. If we are lucky they may be a mutual understanding that, yes, we may just be better off without each other. Other goodbyes are the heart-torn-out-of-our-chest, I’m-not-sure-I-will-make-it-through, devastating-to-our-psyche kind of sayonara. My most penetrating goodbye lasted 14 years. The problem was, I had no one to say goodbye to. How do you say goodbye to a memory?
My life, until the age of 8, revolved around my mom. She was the kind of woman who even her 15 year old eldest daughter never fought with, because she had a way of explaining the ways of the world. She was unabashedly happy, seemingly tireless, and creatively fun. I can honestly say she was and has been a dedicated teacher of life, even after 18 years of absence.
