I bought Promises last night about 11pm on a whim – I finished it 4AM – it’s been ages since I read something so good I just couldn’t put it down. After reading the comments here – your distinction between gfy and ofy – my life experiences that tells me that you’re really on to something. The difference is subtle and nuanced and really genius. I relate most to Jared; I grew up in a very rural mountain town in Utah and personally experienced the persecution and challenges that he and Matt did in the book. My partner of 8 years came out of the closet for me at the age of 36 (just a few months ago!). Thank you for taking the time and doing the research to get the thoughts and feelings of the characters right. For the past 38 years I’ve thought I was alone in my own experience and feelings. How you were able to develop these characters and capture all this so accurately in words is amazing to me. You are truly gifted and I’m looking forward to reading more of your work. Thank you for helping some of us to not feel quite so alone.
