was walking on the shore when I suddenly heard someone sobbing. I turned to look around and saw this girl, all by herself in the darkness, her face buried in her palms. I felt the urge to console her and hesitantly I approached her.
"What is it?" I blurted rather bluntly, although I didn't intend to. She was startled by my voice, but perhaps she was too heart broken to acknowledge that tone and the fact that I was a total stranger. I sat beside her, quietly giving her sometime to compose herself. "What is it? Why were you weeping?" I asked gently this time. She went on to tell me that her mother had been missing for a week and the authorities had no clue yet. She was raised by a single mother, devastated beyond imagination as there was absolutely no next of kin there to comfort her. Freshly out of college and employed in a far off place, she had no abstraction of a tragedy like this. She kept saying that she just wanted to go home to mom. I could tell that she was drunk. The bottle lying on the sand and her breath gave that away, the moment I sat beside her. She went on harping about her mother, her love for the view of the sea, her fondness for magnolias, her weakness for ice cream. She kept on, telling me things trivial and consequential.
"Why don't I drop you to your place, you should get some sleep. I'll stay with you if you wish. I know the commissioner and I'll take you to him and we'll sort everything out," I told her. I helped her up, carrying on about how she shouldn't just yet make up her mind about the disappearance, that her mother could've gone to visit someone and a plethora of possibilities.
I made sure she got in the bed and took to the couch downstairs. I phoned the commissioner, who by the way, was an old friend. I told him all about my evening and he jotted down the address. I requested him to send someone down here, first thing in the morning.

I was walking on the shore when I suddenly heard someone sobbing. The sobs were loud enough to pull me out of my train of thought. In retrospect, I am glad they did, for I know now, that they were headed in an entirely wrong direction.
I stopped. Wiping off the tears in my eyes which were about to fall down through my cheeks to my chin, I made sure my vision is not blurred anymore. I looked around trying to figure out the source of the sound which dragged me out from my imaginary domain, a result of my over thinking, back to this pragmatic sphere. I started walking in the direction of the sobs
