At the mall, I walked by a mannequin that looked just like me. Something odd was happening. It was as if time stood still, like someone had pressed pause on a DVD remote but at a slower playback. And then all at once, tome stopped. I could breathe but not a soul stirred, not one man, woman or child moved a muscle, their smiles and grins, frozen on their faces, their eyes un moving.
Suddenly, the mannequin turned its head slowly, its face, or rather his face, stared with a look of bewilderment and curiosity. It spoke in a human voice, my voice. He spoke of how he was of another world, one just like mine and he was sent in what was some form of an exploration suit to gather intelligence on my world. His world was dying and he needed to interact with a native of this one.
They were peaceful beings, amorphous, working on artificial host bodies to survive the journey from their universe to ours. The time freeze was of their doing. They had at their disposal possibly the greatest bits of temporal technology, capable of easily manipulating localized fields for however long they wished with no side effects. So, I told them of our world, its highs, its lows, what it encompassed, all of it. I was then let go with people giving me curious looks because I was talking to a mannequin who looks exactly like me. But if you find a mannequin that looks like you, have no fear, they come in peace.
