I wake up with a start, my body ice cold but sweating. I look over to see what time it is on my alarm clock: 3 a.m in the morning. My room is dark, but after a moment of focussing my eyes adjust and I can see that there is someone standing at the foot of my bed. I can just make out that he or she is wearing a clown costume, and I’m pretty sure, from the glare and little bit of reflection, that it has a knife.
I suck in a sharp breath, fear swelling over me. My body begins to shake and I stare at the figure. It’s unmoving. Perhaps trying to hide from me now that I’m awake…
But it’s too late. I know it’s there. The moon shines through my window to show me the butchers knife in his left hand.
Another shiver.
I open my mouth in an attempt to scream, but no sound comes out.
It lunges.
Blackness.
