The very next minute the doorbell rang, and I rushed down the steps as if a pack of dogs were chasing me. There was Ava standing in the doorway. I gave her a big hug. We played for some time in the backyard and since we were starving, we needed something to snack on. So I offered her the chocolate cake which Mom and I had baked the night before. She smacked her lips and thankfully praised me. The brown side table caught Ava’s eyes and she asked if it was new. I chuckled and told her it had always been there piled up with stuff. It was getting dark outside and we had completely forgotten all about Sophie. Worried, we tried her cell phone but it was unavailable. We thought that maybe she was mad at us for no rhyme or reason, and wouldn’t show up. We had completely forgotten about Sophie. We hadn't yet switched on the lights when rat-a-tat-tat we heard a loud knocking on the door. We jumped out of our skins and seconds later again there were a few louder knocks. Scared, we clutched each other’s hands. For the first time, I was terrified of answering the door. I asked Ava, but being more frightened, she flatly refused. Well, I guess I had no choice. The knocking was getting louder and louder by the minute. I could feel my hands getting numb and my heart beating faster. Clutching the doorknob, I wondered whether to open it or not. Sweat formed on my face and praying to all the Gods, I turned the knob to slowly open it. As the door creaked open I saw Ava looking at me cautiously from the living room. In the chorus at the horrifyingly ugly lady standing there. She was tall, with all cuts and bruises on her face, hair all matted and nails like cats claws. With a sinking heart, This weird person shut the door and was laughing like some wicked witch.
