Answer:
There was a thief who created havoc in the society but people could never catch him red-handed. One day he entered the house of the priest as he got to know about a golden idol that was present in his house.
The thief successfully crept in when the priest was asleep. His family was out for some work and the priest was alone at home. As he entered, he could find the idol right in front of him and was overwhelmed.
He took it along with him and tried to run out of the house when suddenly a neighbour saw him and started shouting. The priest quickly got up but the thief was already caught by the neighbours.
They wanted to hand him over to the police but the kind priest requested them not to as it was not real gold and he gifted it to the thief. The thief was surprised at this gesture of the priest and decided never to steal again.
Answer:
The Kind Priest
Once upon a time in a village in France lived a kind priest who loved all and helped all. His sister did not like it. He even sold his belongings and articles to help people in need. He always kept the doors and windows of his house open --- even at night.
One night, quite late he was reading the Bible. In the dead of the night an absconding thief. He had a knife in his hand, sneaking behind the priest, he caught him and threatened him not to make any noise. He asked him to give him food as he had not eaten anything for many days. The priest took pity on him and served him food and drink.
After the food and drink he began feeling good. The wine he drank made him frank with the priest. He shared with him his past. He narrated to the priest that he was a good citizen in the past. He had a wife and home. Then the economy suffered from recession. He lost employment. The bread became costlier. His wife fell ill. She was hungry. He begged people to help his wife. But no one helped; then he stole bread for his hungry wife and was caught. He was sent to prison. He pleaded with the police; but the authorities did not listen to him. In the prison he was treated like an animal. A few days later he was told his wife died of illness. This made him a wild beast.
One day he got an opportunity to escape from prison. He survived by living in jungles; that night he was passing by the priest’s house when he found the door open and entered. The priest sympathized with him and told him God will end his sufferings. The priest made him sleep and went to his room. The thief could not sleep. He saw the priest’s silver candlesticks. He picked them up and went out of the house. The priest heard the noise of the door being shut. As he came to see the thief, he saw his beloved candle-sticks gone.
The thief was moving suspiciously; the police saw him and caught him. The inspector found the thief was hiding something. He recognized the priest’s candlesticks. He arrested him and brought him to the priest.
The priest knew if he said the thief had stolen his candlesticks, they would again imprison him. In order to save him he said, “This gentleman is my friend; I gave him my candlesticks. You may leave him and go.” The police went leaving the thief and the priest alone.
The thief felt sorry and promised the priest he would become a good man. The priest gifted him the candlesticks to start a new life in Paris.
