Explanation:

It was a cold stormy night in the little country town of Pineville in Queensland. As Lisa’s Mum and Dad closed the door and left for dinner, the newsreader announced that there was an escaped mass murderer that was only a few kilometres north of Pineville and was last spotted heading south.

After Lisa had heard this terrifying news she rushed over to the phone to call her parents but the ringing from the table made Lisa realise that her parents left the phone at home. Feeling a little panicked Lisa called her friend Lucy over for company. When Lucy finally arrived they both sat down and ate some delicious, comforting, homemade apple crumble.

While the girls were enjoying their delicious desert, they heard a strange creaking noise outside. Both girls looked at the window and then at each other. Lucy looked very frightened. Trying to calm her, Lisa told her that it was probably just the cat. Suddenly the power went out and the sound of lightning and thunder filled the room. They grabbed each other’s hands in fear and sat paralysed in silence until the disturbing sound of creaking alarmed them once again. This time it was louder and heavier, like someone was walking upon it. The two girls pulled their blankets up to their chin still too scared to move. Looking up, the girls saw a strange glowing, like a candle flickering in the dark. Now the girls were shaking like trees in a cyclone and terrified out of their wits.

Suddenly there were three startling knocks on the door. The girls nearly jumped out of their skins! They turned to look at the door, the strange glow still flickering. Lisa and Lucy watched the door in still horror. Suddenly they heard a knock on the door again. Lucy and Lisa squealed squeezing each other tighter. Before long another loud knock. “It might be the murderer”, whispered Lucy. Silence again, then a small voice called out “Hello, Anyone home”?

Lisa stood up and walked towards the door grabbing her mum’s hockey stick as she passed through the hall. Wielding the hockey stick Lisa yanked open the door. She heard a little yelp of fear and looked down to see her 9-year-old neighbour with his father standing at the door with a candle, waiting in the rain. Letting out a sigh of relief Lisa let them in. Once they were dry they told the girls that they came over to ask if the power at their house had also gone out and to check they were Ok. Lisa then explained to them that they were scared to open the door sooner because they thought it might be the escaped murderer.

In the end it wasn’t a murderer at all. It was just the caring neighbours checking to see if they were all ok. They were ok. Actually, they had been ok all night and were ok for the rest of their lives.
