There are three children sitting on a log near a stream. One of them looks up at the sky and says, "You know what would be really funny? If a bird flew over us and pooped on your heads!"
"Not as funny as if the bird pooped on your head!" another called.
The third child just sat still, enjoying the forest. He could hear all the sounds of the animals around him and he delighted in that. He wished he could talk to them so they would understand them. He wanted to know their secrets. He knew they must have a lot of them.
His friends got up and went splashing into the stream. They were always so loud. Why can't they just be quieter, he thought to himself. He decided to go a little deeper into the forest to see what he could find.
He found a spot to sit that wasn't too wet from the rains they'd had the day before. He sat, cross-legged, with his eyes closed, for ten minutes when he heard something.
"Hello."
Sam's eyes shot open. He looked around, but didn't see anyone standing near him.
"I said hello. Isn't the polite thing to say 'hello' in return?" the voice queried. Sam probably should have been afraid, but more than anything else, he was curious.
"I want to say hi," Sam said. "But I don't see you." His eyes darted around as he turned his head left and right.
"Look down here. At the ground." Sam did as he was instructed. Sitting right in front of his legs was a large frog.
Sam nearly jumped up when he saw the frog. "Are YOU the one talking to me?" Sam asked in complete disbelief.
"Why yes. I am. Do you see anyone else here to talk to you?"
"Well, no," Sam replied. "But I didn't think frogs could talk either."
"Of course we can. It's just that most people don't believe we can, so they don't hear us. I believe what you all hear is 'ribbit.' Does that sound right?"
Sam laughed. "Yep! That's it! I even have a toy that says that's what frogs sound like." Sam was now puzzled. "I could never hear you before. Why can I hear you now?"
"I'm not sure," the frog replied. "But I'll bet you were just wishing that you could talk to us, weren't you?"
"I was! How did you know that?" Sam was excited now. A talking frog!
"That's usually what people tell us they were thinking just before they could hear us talking."
"Can other animals besides frogs talk?"
"Do you think they can?" The frog tipped his head sideways.
"Yes! I have always wanted to talk to animals!" Sam realized he'd been rude again. "What's your name, Mr. Frog. My name is Sam."
"Hello, Sam. It's nice to meet you. I'm Wilbur."
"Can I meet some of your friends?"
Wilbur pondered this for a minute. "Will you be nice to them? Sometimes humans aren't so nice to us. Feeding us things that make us sick. Kicking us."
Sam was horrified at the thought. "I would NEVER do anything like that!"
"I believe you," Wilbur said as he turned and hopped away. "Follow me! I'll introduce you to all kinds of animals!"
