- Title :- Lord Buddha and the Bereaved Mother
Many years ago, during Buddha's time, there lived a poor woman in a village. She had none else in this word except her son. The son was her only support in her old age. But tragedy struck her life. One day, her son fell seriously ill. Nothing could cure him from his illnesa and after a few days he passed away, leaving her old mother grief-stricken. The old woman became helpless. She could not accept her son's death calmly. She thought of some measure by which she could get her dead son back to life.
The poor woman thought that Lord Buddha could help her. She went to Lord Buddha and prayed with folded hands, "My Lord, I am a poor widow. I had a son in my life to support me in my old age. But he also died. Please give my son back to me". Lord Buddha understood the feeling of the bereaved mother. He told her calmly, "Bring me some mustard seeds from a house where no one has ever died. Then, I will revive your son". Hearing it, the woman at once set out on her quest. She went from house to house in search of mustard seeds from a house where no one had ever died. But she only met with some sad replied. One said, "I lost my husband last week", while another said, "Our eldest son died last year". She didn't loss hope and continued her search, but couldn't find any house where no one had ever died and became very sad.
At last, she cam back to Lord Buddha with broken heart and told him the result of her quest. Then Lord Buddha advised her to be calm and have patience. He said to the woman, "Death is common to all living being. No one can escape it". He told her to bear her sorrow patiently. His gentle words touched the poor woman deeply. She fell at the Lord's feet and thankrd him. Her heart grew light. Then, she returned to her house and she was not sad anymore.
