Harishchandra was a king from Ayodhya which was situated at the bank of the river Saryu in Uttar Pradesh in India. He was known for his promises which he used to keep at his risk of life.
One day a rishi met him to whom he promised that he can spend his life in protecting his promise i.e his words. He promised that he can keep his promise to save his rituals and dharma.
He had to pay the pennies to the same rishi. After some time the conditions became such that he lost his kingdom. Later, he sold his wife and his son in order to get the pennies.
The king lost everything in order to save his words given to rishi. These are the stories that inspire people to respect and keep their promises.
