There is a very worn phrase, as tattered as a child's treasured rocking horse, its chestnut coat peeling into great bare patches, ebon bridle faded, great ocher eyes dulled and covered with the finest gossamer film of dust, as though the stallion has long since borne his last Knight, and the magic of the Realm has failed him, and his sight is forever lost. The phrase is "If wishes were horses, beggars would ride." It is this phrase that, as sure as my rocking horse Champion bore me through fire, over hill, through dale, over briar, into realms full of dark and danger, into tales that seemed so bleak I often didn't wish to know the ending...for how could the end be happy? Yes, as surely as he galloped in place in our living room, so too, does this phrase place me firmly in the dreams of a rocking horse...when I was three...and ponies and horses were gods that brought me the sun each day...
