Having lost her only son in an accident she was feeling utterly frustrated when she met Anita who had come to stay at her neighbor Janaki’s place for a couple of months. Anita was a young girl in her early twenties while she as in her mid forties. But, age was not a barrier and soon Preetha found a good friend in Anita. Anita was a bubbly girl who lifted the spirits of all around her. They went for walks together both in the morning and evening. Sometimes, Anita called Preetha to accompany her for shopping. In fact, Preetha had learnt to smile again and slowly begun to move forward in life only because of Anitha.
One day, when Anita did not turn up for her evening walk, Preetha went over to her neighbor’s place to call her. She was shocked to hear that Anita had gone back to her home city where she had come from. Slowly, she went back home wondering why Anita had to do this to her. She had not told Preetha a word when they had met in the morning. It was nearly two weeks and Preetha had withdrawn to her old self.
Then, one day she heard her door bell ring. When she opened the door, she was in for a surprise. It was Anita but she had changed a lot. She had lost a lot of weight and she was looking quite weak. Also, she was completely bald now. Preetha held her hand and brought her inside. When she asked her what as happening, Anita confessed that she was a cancer patient and she had gone back for yet another chemo session. Her illness was in the final stages and she did not want anyone to pity or feel sorry for her. This is why she had always tried to remain quite cheerful to others. Preetha was quite surprised at Anita’s attitude but it had taught her a lesson to move on with life and not drown herself in her sorrows.
