ANSWER:
Who is Sudha Chandran?
Many know her as the woman who dances on one artificial leg called the Jaipur Foot. She also revolutionized Indian Television by donning the role of the vamp mother-in-law in the serial Kahiin Kisi Roz. However, apart from that, her life has been an inspiration and a perfect reason as to why you should never give up.
Sudha began learning how to dance when she was 3 and a half years old. She would go to school, then go for her dance training and be back home only by 9:30 pm.In her 10th exams, she stood first with 80% but instead of picking science for her further studies, she chose arts...just so that she could continue to dance. By this time she had performed at several events and done hundreds of stage shows...She was just about beginning when life took a strange turn. She was travelling from Trichy by bus, when she met with a major accident that left her with a fracture and some cuts -- she was probably the least injured there. However, because of the heavy influx of patients, she was attended to by a couple of interns who forgot to attend to the cut on her right ankle and went ahead to wrap it up. This resulted in her foot getting gangrene and because of the fear of it spreading throughout her body, her parents had to take the difficult decision of amputating her right foot. She was shattered because It was only then that she realised just how passionate she felt about dancing. She began to learn how to walk again and it took her 4 months to even walk straight.Once she got the Jaipur leg, it took her 3 years of physiotherapy to recover and feel normal again. She remembers people coming to her and saying things like, 'it's so sad your dreams can't come true' or 'we wish you could dance' when she decided to re-learn what she had known her entire life-- to dance. It was a slow and painful process but with every step she learnt that this is what she wanted. Finally one day, she went to her dad and told him that she was ready to perform again...and he was shocked! She was to perform in St.Xaviers college when the Sunday morning headline read - 'Looses a Foot, Walks a Mile' and the show was completely sold out!She began to get nervous before going up on stage when her Grandmother told her, 'Don't worry, God is with you...let the miracle happen.' but she was so angry that she said, 'If God was with me he wouldn't ever do this to me!"The show ended, she performed the Varanyam with ease and received a standing ovation. When she was home, her dad came to her and touched her feet saying that I'm touching the feet of the Goddess Saraswati because she had done the impossible! The 1984 Telugu film Mayuri, in which she plays herself, was inspired by her life story. The 1986 film Nache Mayuri was a Hindi remake of the Telugu original. Her career in television includes Kaahin Kissii Roz where she portrayed the character of Ramola Sikand which became an instant hit. Since then she has acted in several TV shows such as K Street Pali Hill and Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa. She has also acted in Tamil serials including Kalasam and Arasi.Dance still remains her passion, so much so that she has established a dance academy in Mumbai, 'Sudha Chandran Academy of Dance', which has branches all over Mumbai and Pune.
