My older brother and I always had a strong bond. We always looked out for each other. Our parents once took us to a resort that was on the edge of a forest. It had everything, a lake, a living area near the water, trees everywhere, you name it. One fine day, I and my brother were exploring the area. In retrospect, we should have listened to the caretaker and our parents when they told us not to venture out alone, but two curious children would have none of that. So, we set off, feeling like characters out of an adventure story.
Little did we know we’d end up being in one. We walked in silence, taking in the beauty of things we’d only seen in textbooks. Everything was perfect until I heard a crack and a sliding of rocks. And then I fell. I slid down some rocks into the river. Thankfully the current was not strong but then again, I didn’t know how to swim. My mad brother took his shirt off and jumped in too. At that instant I had no hope we’d get out. Turns out, my brother was smarter than me.
He grabbed onto a long vine, before he waded in. I thank my stars that vine was there that day. He waded in and I held on to him for dear life. At that moment, I knew, I always had someone watching out for me. The scolding and punishment did not hurt as much as I remembering I almost drowned. Even my brother tried covering for me, telling them it was an accident, but to no avail. The rest of the trip thankfully was uneventful but the takeaway that I always had someone to count on, remains.
