The school bell's shrill ring echoed through the corridors and Nisa slumped in her seat in relief. The day was finally over. A small, shy girl of ten, Nisa hated learning and school in general. She despised coming to school. Who would she enjoy it? All her classmates ever did was bully and poke fun at her.
She scrambled from her desk and quickly jogged off the campus. Walking down 6th Street, she glanced around to make sure no one was watching and then slipped into a small alleyway. Se stepped out of the narrow space onto a dirt trail and followed it to the forest. There she was! Nisa's only friend steped out from the shadows and Nisa began her daily lesson of teaching the little girl how to read and write. The young gypsy, Reia's parents were too poor to send her to school. As Nisa taught, she was once again amazed by the spark of interest in the child's eys and the way she would look at Nisa's books in a hungry, longing sort way.
That day, something changed inside Nisa. She suddenly became aware of how fortunate she was. She vowed to never let anything get in the way of her studies again, and most of all, she vowed to be a change.
Now, when the school bell rings, Nisa still flies down the steps and hurries to the woods. But now it's because of how eager she is to teach those bright young minds who were not so fortunate as her, and those beautiful sparks of hope that she wanted to fan into a blaze someday.
