Everything in our environment which can be used to satisfy our needs, provided, it is technologically accessible, economically feasible and culturally acceptable can be termed as resource.

Nature has bestowed upon our Mother Earth large varieties of rocks,soil,minerals, vegetation,animals,etc.We use these gifts of nature to fulfill our day to days needs.We need air to breathe,water to drink and food to eat.We get all these things from the earth.Hence,all the things on earth which are necessary for our existence on this planet,are called resources.Resources become usable when they are processed in several ways.The utilization of resource depends upon various factors,such as:
(1) Availability of resources
(2)Skill of human beings
(3) Availability of capital
(4) Advancement of technology(tools,machines,etc)
(5) Availability of transport and communication facilities
(6) Availability of water,etc.
Resource planning will help in making resources available to each state and make the people aware about its utilization.It is also necessary in order to use them in a sustainable manner.The basis of classification of resources are-
(i) Renewability (ii) Origin (iii) Occurrence (iv) Development.
Technology plays an important role for the development of resources because with advancement of technology,availability of capital and skilled labour became a necessity for the utilization of resources.
