Answer:

A Strange Day

Wallace Smith went to work one day, to ponder bills he still had to pay. But whenever his co-workers went by, he found himself filled with fright. You may scoff, but Wallace knew; something was off, something askew.

It all looked the same, and yet it did not; like a lace on a shoe that was missing the knot. But to this idea, he could not commit—he told himself he was imagining it. Nothing had changed, everything was ok; there was nothing strange about today. So he went back to his papers with a determined nod, and focussed on things that were never so odd.

But as time ticked away and this day went on, Wallace couldn’t help but feel that something was wrong. He didn’t like what he felt that day, like his place in this world melting away. He paused to stare at the people going by, so strange and so ordinary at the same time. They looked perfectly normal, but there was something very off; the way they moved, the way they talked, even how they coughed. They were just like puppets pretending to be beings—but he couldn’t understand what he was seeing.

But what could Wallace say to voice his fears? Anyone would think he’d had too many beers! So he forced his feet to go, with this strange buzzing in his head, unable to shake that awful feeling of dread.

He tried not to see it, he tried not to look, but the strangeness followed him with every step that he took. Couldn’t anyone see it? Could they be so blind? Or was he simply going out of his mind?

The sun was setting by the time he reached home, his street so crowded, yet he felt so alone. The people laughed and they chatted, but it was all just so fake—Wallace wasn’t sure how much more he could take.

Then he saw what he should have as soon as he’d stepped out the door—the shadows, the shadows—they were darker than before. People had shadows, but what if that wasn’t so? What if that wasn’t the order things would go? Wallace thought with great dismay: what if shadows had people, just for today?

Poor Wallace went straight to his home, so deathly scared, so very alone. And like a bereaved mourner he wept in a corner, unsure of what would become of his life. The night was long, but then morning came along, putting an end to this terrible strife.

With the rising sun, new shadows came, driving the ancient darkness away. Dawn flushed the sky like a merciful rain, and just like that, the world was normal again.

Wallace Smith never knew what to say, and just tried to shoo the memories away. But deep inside, he knew with dismay, that he would never forget that very strange day.

But do not think this was only his

sorrow—you never know what lurks in your own tomorrow…
