The photosynthesis is usually defined as the process by which the green plants can synthesize their own food in the existence of sunlight, and supply of carbon dioxide (CO₂), water (H₂O), and in return it liberates food and oxygen (O₂) that is essential for all living organism to survive. This process is possible due to the presence of green pigments called chlorophyll, on the leaves of the plants which absorb the required amount of sunlight.

During this process of photosynthesis, the conversion of light energy into chemical energy takes place .

Due to this ability of the plants to synthesize their food, they are considered to be the producers and the consumers are directly dependent on them.
