Answer:

When we do not trouble ourselves about whether or not something is a work of art, if we just act in each moment with composure and mindfulness, each minute of our life is a work of art.” — Thich Nhat Hanh

Have you ever needed affirmation or validation that your path or work of art was worthy enough to continue?

If you have, you are not alone!

In Rilke’s first Letter to a Young poet, he writes a response to a letter to an ambitious young poet looking for validation of his work. The young poet had recently sent Rilke a collection of poems and asked for feedback.

Rilke’s response was blunt, but immensely poetic. Here is an excerpt:

You ask whether your verses are any good. You ask me. You have asked others before this. You send them to magazines. You compare them with other poems, and you are upset when certain editors reject your work. Now (since you have said you want my advice) I beg you to stop doing that sort of thing. You are looking outside, and that is what you should most avoid right now. No one can advise or help you — no one. There is only one thing you should do. Go into yourself. Find out the reason that commands you to write; see whether it has spread its roots into the very depths of your heart; confess to yourself whether you would have to die if you were forbidden to write. This most of all: ask yourself in the most silent hour of your night: must I write? Dig into yourself for a deep answer. And if this answer rings out in assent, if you meet this solemn question with a strong, simple “I must”, then build your life in accordance with this necessity; your whole life.

What you look for is within you

Upen was a very curious boy since his childhood. He wanted to know everything. His inquisitive mind would often make him wonder at the mysteries of almost everything. He wanted to know who had put the stars in the sky or whether they could be counted. He wanted to know who put the snow on the mountains; who made the sun shine continuously. He wanted to know all the secrets of the world and the universe.

Once he met a very holy man in the mountains. He had gone to his uncle’s village in Himachal Pradesh. On an afternoon he was walking along a stream and at some distance he saw a cave. As he went near the cave, he saw a holy man sitting in meditative posture. He was surrounded by a divine light. Upen kept looking at the man long. And then the holy man opened his eyes and said, “Upen, sit down and have something to eat”, the divine man offered some fruits to Upen.

The boy was astonished. He thought, “How come this man knows my name?”

“Don’t be amazed, son”, I know everything.

Further astonished, Upen asked the sage, “Kindly excuse me, would you just explain me how you know everything sitting in this cave?”

Smiling, the holy man said, “All knowledge is inside the human mind. All you need is to bring this knowledge to consciousness by the right focus. When I sit here with my eyes closed, I actually focus on knowledge. That’s how I know everything.”

Upen was so excited to have learnt the secret to know everything from the sage. He asked, “Is it possible for me to know all the knowledge?”

“Yes”, said the saint.

Anything you want to know, just look within.

Upen thanked the holy man and went away in peace to know everything.
