"I refuse to let my fear control me anymore." This was the quote that I read in the book  'Hunter Bros'. I loved that book up to the point where John (the bigger brother) died. I hated the thought of my brother dying, even though it was in the book. This was because I had lost my own brother 4 years ago.

                                                 12 years later

It was my 22nd birthday when Bob (my best friend) came up to me and said "The new edition of 'Hunter Bros' just came out. You better buy it. I've read it it, and it is ..." Before he could finish his sentence, my mother came and told us to go upstairs and go to bed.

In the middle of the night, I got a dream which had Iron Man fighting against a black monster with twisted horns and it was almost 7 feet tall. I was scared to death and woke up gasping for air. As I got up, I saw a tall figure looking like the one in the dream but scarier. I remembered the quote by John from the book 'Hunter Bros'. I tried to control myself and to silently wake Bob up. He didn't wake up and I tried to sleep as if I didn't see anything.

The next night, my father and I were out fixing my old BMW. As my father went to the shed to get some extra parts and tools, I sensed as if something was staring at me but I didn't think anything of it. My dad was gone for almost 20 minutes when I got the same feeling again. This time I was a bit more scared. Almost 2 seconds later, I heard heavy breathing above my head but I didn't see my dad anywhere. I tuned to stone. I turned to look over my right shoulder and I couldn't believe my eyes. It was right there. Staring at me furiously. It stared for 5 minutes for which felt like 5 hours and it said in a very demonic voice "YOU CANNOT ESCAPE!!!!" followed by a very high pitch scream and a demonic laugh. I gulped and closed my eyes. By the time I opened them, It was gone.

We moved houses that month and I got another dream (similar to the old one) with the demon in it. It said "YOU CANNOT ESCAPE!!!!" over and over again until I woke up. It reminded me of the day when it came to me and nearly killed me.

That incident haunts me till date every time that dream comes or the demon appear in my backyard.

Answer:

Everyone fears at least one thing. If you say you have no fear, then you are a liar. Fear is a natural emotion. No one is exempt from this. Some people even let fear control their lives. I believe you should never let your fear decide your fate.

You know what the biggest, most common fear in the world is? Death. Many people fear the idea of death, the chance of never existing again. Even though everybody dies one day, it is the great equalizer. The average life expectancy is roughly 70 so by the time you’re 20, almost a third of your life has passed you by. I don’t want to continue living life in fear, like I already do, by the time I’m 20.

There are many fears in this world. Afraid of being all alone, the fear of heights, darkness, and insects. Fear of never graduating and fear of the unknown. Even the fear of what might seem to be irrational, of the color blue. I admit that I myself live in fear. I wish I didn’t, I wish I had more courage to stand up for myself and face my fears. I am afraid of many things, being alone, the dark, and even walking around corners. But I don’t let those fears stop me from doing the things I need to do.

I have even deeper fears though. I can’t explain them, but I let them rule my life. I fear asking my parents a simple question. I fear all the possible outcomes of situations. I cower in that fear, which upsets me even more.

Because it is familiar and seems secure we cling to the familiar. I am so used to the feeling of fear, if I don’t start worrying about something, I feel strange. It is inevitable that I will not make all of the right choices; I know that for a fact. I must grow enough today to face yesterday’s mistakes of living in fear.

Life goes by quickly. That’s why you should take risks, don’t hesitate, and trust your gut feeling. Face your fears and don’t just settle for second best. If you don’t try, you’ll never know if you could’ve succeeded. Success is not about achievement, it is about having the nerve to step out into the unknown. I know I don’t want to be sitting around at my 80th birthday full of regrets for not taking any chances.

Ask yourself, If I died tomorrow, what would I regret today? Think about it, I know I have. I regret so much but I will not let anything control me .
