I was shocked to know that my friend could do such a big blunder because of lack of patience. Lack of patience could land one into serious trouble. It happened that my friend, Ramesh had recently been gifted a new Apple I-phone 6 on his seventeenth birthday. He adored it more than anything. He kept it with him all the time. He would not let anyone touch it. Before going to school, he would lock it in his locker and take the key along. His mania for the phone had crossed all limits.

As chance would have it, his family received an invitation to attend a wedding at Delhi. So the entire family got train tickets booked. The wedding was on Sunday, so they boarded the train on Saturday afternoon. I myself went to drop them at the station in my car. I came home and got busy in my routine activities.

At about 4 p.m. I received a shocking call from my friend’s brother. Crying he said, “Ramesh has been hospitalized. If possible do reach Appolo hospital in Ambala Cant.”  “How did it happen?” asked I, “Were you not on train? What exactly has happened to him?” He explained, “As you know the train had to stop at Ambala briefly. We came at stood at the door. The train began moving, we kept standing at the door. Ramesh was standing with us too. He was checking his Whatsapp messages. Since it was an electric train, the train accelerated its speed with a jolt. Unfortunately, Ramesh’s phone fell from his hand onto the railway track. Before we could do anything, Ramesh had jumped out of the train to retrieve his phone. We screamed and shouted and had the train stopped. As we reached the spot, we found Ramesh unconscious and his phone broken. So come fast if it is convenient to you. He has got his right leg fractured and severe grazes on all his body.” He hung up. I was just wondering at the unwise rashness of my friend and wishing this accident could have been averted if he were a little patient.

I was shocked to know that my friend who had always been very good in studies failed in the final examinations. I found out that he had some problems at home and did not get time to concentrate on his studies. His father had been ill and there was not enough money to look after the household expenses. So he had taken up some work as an errand boy.

He was very unhappy and had lost interest in studies. I went to his house and talked to him. I told him the story of Mahatma Gandhi. He lived an exemplary life. He never spoke untruth. He used to say that more things are wrought by prayer than man can think of. He had firm faith in goodness and God.

I told him about the way he worked patiently and overcame all the obstacles. Even though many times it seemed that gaining independence was an impossible task he did not give up his faith and patience. And one day his hard work and patience bore fruit and India became independent.

Similarly we should not give up hope and be patient. Surely one day the dark clouds of despair will disperse and we will be happy.

After this my friend became hopeful and once again started taking interest in studies. His patience and hard work were fruitful when in the next examination he stood first like before.
