Answer:
Once upon a time lived a girl named Brita. She was a very beautiful girl but people envied and hated her for her beauty. Brita was lonely and unhappy.
One day when she was sitting in her beautiful garden and was knitting, she saw a bird that had fallen into the well. It was a beautiful robin. The bird was trying to get out of the well, but its wings were too wet. The little girl went up to the well, turned the crank and the bucket went down. The bird pulled itself up into the bucket and Brita lifted the bucket up. She took the robin out of the bucket and took it into the house. There she dried the little bird. Suddenly she noticed that the bird tried to tell her something and asked her to go somewhere. The girl followed it into the wood. It was a dark place and nobody ever went there. Some years ago a boy had entered the wood and nobody had seen him since that time. The townspeople believed that there lived a witch, who ate children in the forest. When Brita was so far in the forest, that she couldn’t see the sun, she began to feel scared. Suddenly she arrived at a little house. The house had a chimney and a very bad-looking smoke was coming out of it. The girl went into the house and saw an ugly woman. The woman turned around and looked at Brita. In the corner, there was a boy who was very thin and tangled. The girl realized that it was the boy who the townspeople had been looking for and the woman was the witch. The girl asked the old woman to let the boy go. The witch, who wanted to be as pretty as Brita, told her that she had to give up her beauty and then she would let the boy go. Brita agreed. But the stealing of beauty isn’t easy even for witches. She sent Brita to collect some things from the wood. At first she had to go over a river with boiling blood. When Brita reached the river, she saw that the bridge had broken. She found a tree and put it over the river as a bridge and went over it. Next she had to pick a flower that was invisible. She had no idea how to find it but suddenly she smelled something. It was so good that she went to the place where it came from. When she was already lying on the ground, her nose touched something. She picked it up and put it into her pocket. At last she had to find a unicorn and take a little piece from its mane. The unicorn was so pretty that she couldn’t turn away from it. When she finally could lift her head, she went up to it and cut a little piece from his mane. Then she went back to the witch’s house. There was soup already boiling in the kettle. The witch took the components from the little girl and threw them into the water. The last thing she needed was a hair from both of them. When she had thrown the hairs into the soup it changed into dark green. The witch drank it and suddenly she began to change. Soon she was looking like a princess. But Brita was beautiful as before and the cruel witch didn’t understand what had happened, why Brita hadn’t changed. Then she realized that she hadn’t changed because she had a brave and beautiful heart. The witch let the boy go and they went together back to the village.
The little boy told townspeople the story and they did not hate Brita any more for her beauty because it had saved the boy’s life.
