Once there was an old man. He had four sons. They had fallen into bad company. They mixed up with gamblers. The father advised them not to mix with such persons.

But the advice had no effect on them. One day, the old man bought a basketful of mangoes. He told the sons to eat the mangoes the next morning.

The old man kept one rotten mango among them. The next morning, the sons found that most of the mangoes were rotten. The father told them the cause. The sons learnt a lesson. They left the bad company.

Answer:

The danger of bad company

A rich merchant was worried that his four sons has fallen into bad company. They started picking up many bad habits. The merchant advised his sons to stay away from bad friends. But the sons paid no attention. The father thought that it would be better not to scold them further because quarreling will only make matter worse.

The father thought about what would be the best thing to do to make his four sons realise their error of keeping bad company. Finally he came up with a plan. He went to the market and purchased a bag of fresh apples and also a rotten one. On returning home he called his sons. He told them to put the bag of apples along with the rotten one in the almirah. The sons obeyed after all it was not a difficult thing to do. After some days the father asked his sons to bring the bag of apples. The sons brought the bag and placed it on the table near their father. The father told them to open the bag. As the sons opened the bag they were surprised to see that all the apples have become rotten.

The father gently explained to them that one rotten apple have spoiled all the other good apples in the bag. In the same way one bad friend could spoil all the other good boys and girls. The sons immediately understood the lesson that his father was trying to teach them. They promised their father that they will change their old ways. They stopped mingling with bad companions and became good sons.

Moral: It is better to be alone than in bad company.
