As I got off the call from my friend regarding our next meet up ,the news flashed in the screen that the entire nation will be on lockdown from tomorrow. Oh my God, what a devastation!
Our Annual exams were just over. We were all very excited. The boys of the hostel had all gone home. We were all keeping in touch through video conferencing.
One of the hostel boys -Vivek had come up with a brilliant idea. He suggested that we all should meet up at each others places, especially those who lived in the neighbouring places which were within a distance of twelve hours of travelling.
We had already visited two extraordinary places. One was Vivek's home at the mangrove engulfed forest of Sundarbans and Kehav's place- Deoghar a most scenic hill resort and a pilgrim site. We were thoroughly enjoying ourselves.
The next meet was to be at Mandarmani an outstanding sea-side. We were all brimming with excitement . I had almost finished packing my bag, disconnected Vivek's call when the blood curdling news flashed on the screen.
All my excitement fizzled out like a just opened Thums up bottle. I could not hold my tears. I fought them flashing hot and streaming down my cheeks.
The rest of the day was spent in mourning. None of us called each other. Next morning there was an urgent message from Vivek that within ten minutes we should meet on skype.
All of us wondered what our travel planner had to say. Vivek came up with another great idea. He said he had spoken to his local police officer and with his permission and taking all preventive measures he had volunteered to be a Covid -19 help volunteer.
It meant visiting the old and helpless people all over the locality and assisting help. If any one was suffering from any problem, to report to the police. Vivek suggested we should video record our activities and show it to the rest of our friends over skype.
Next day onwards we all set out on our cycles in our localities wearing masks and gloves and maintaining social distancing. We found so many in need, so many elderly people unable to go for shopping, some were suffering due to the lack of helping hands.
We became their helping hands. The police had given us a heath worker status and we helped them as much as we could.
It is almost three weeks now into the lock down but thanks to Vivek we are doing a wonderful job. We are not bored and we are doing something worthy. After all only those live who live for others.
