Answer:

Robert Bruce was a great patriot of Scotland. He wanted to free Scotland from the yoke of the English. It was a great task. He gave many battles to the English but each time he was badly defeated. Once he was badly routed. A price was put upon his head. His life was in great peril. He fled for his life from place to place. He took shelter in a cave. A kindly spider wove a web over the mouth of the cave.

The English soldiers searched for him high and low. They passed by that cave. Seeing that the cob-web over the mouth of the cave was quite undisturbed, they concluded that none had entered the cave. Robert Bruce sat inside the cave in a sad and lonely mood. He was as sad as man can be. He was in despair. He thought of giving up any further attempt.

Just then his eyes fell upon a spider hanging from a very delicate thread. It tried to reach its cob-web on the ceiling. It clung and crawled inch by inch but down it came each time with a slippery sprawl. It made nine brave attempts but each time it failed. The king thought that the foolish creature would try no more. But to his great surprise, it tried again. Inch by inch, with great caution and care, with pluck and courage, slowly and steadily, it went higher and higher till it reached its cob-web.

"Bravo!" the king shouted, "All honour to those who try." The king took heart. He summoned courage. He was up and doing. He gathered his forces and inspired them to fight to the last. He gave another battle to the English. He and his men fought desperately. They put the English to rout. They carried the day. Scotland was free. All credit went to Bruce.
