The narrator decided to leave the things with Mrs Dorling because she thought that memories of her mother were enough for her. She did not want to take the things from Mrs Dorling. Her decision gives an unexpected twist to the story because from the start of the story we get the impression that the narrator wants back the things. But in the end we come to realise that she actually wanted to feel her mother's presence but know she understood that things are not needed to feel the presence of people, only memories are enough.
