Answer:

. Beloved by Toni Morrison (1987)

This great testament to the horrors of slavery opens with a haunting. “124 was spiteful. Full of a baby’s venom. The women in the house knew it and so did the children.” In the Nobel prize-winning author’s most famous book, the ghost of a baby killed by her mother to save her from slavery is a malicious sprite but also a metaphor for the way in which the great evil of slavery haunts its victims after abolition, haunts the history of America and should haunt us all. To write it “was to pitch a tent in a cemetery inhabited by highly vocal ghosts”, Morrison said, talking of the “the chaos of the needy dead”. When Morrison’s death was announced at the beginning of August, many commentators cited Beloved as one of the greatest novels of all time. If you haven’t read it yet, what’s wrong with you?

                                     A Beautiful Surprise

When I came out from my house for a night walk and saw someone calling me again and again. Every time I picked up the phone, no one answered. It was about five times I did so. But when I picked the phone sixth time, I heard a gruff voice saying that his gang that was a very notorious one and wanted by the police had kidnapped my best friend Ravi. He further added if I need to rescue him, I must pay him the sum of Rs. one lakh and I must not give any information to the police to catch them red-handed or they would kill Ravi.

I knew that Ravi's parents were not at home as they had gone out of town to attend a function. So, it was my prime responsibilty to rescue him without causing any harm. I decided to go to the old, abandoned and deserted house where the gangsters told me to reach. I was nervous as well as panic-stricken. I had collected the money from my home and ran as fast as I could.

After one hour, when I arrived there, I met some people who told that the house was haunted. Although, I was scared, I went there with huge sum of money. The house was filled with darkness. Suddenly, the lights were switched on and the colourful strings fell upon me and I saw my family, Ravi and my other friends wishing me ''Happy Birthday Gauri''. I was surprised and overjoyed. It is the most beautiful surprise I've ever got.
