Write a summary of the extract given below and suggest a suitable title for it.

A hundred years ago, people were in the habit of making their own amusement.

Men and women read and wrote far more than their descendants do now; very long

books, in several parts were the fashion, and many people especially ladies, kept

diaries in which they wrote long descriptions of their doings and feelings. Ladies did

a lot of needlework.

When a group of people were gathered together, they talked, played cards,

read aloud to each other or went riding, shooting or walking together. Most people

could sing a little or play some musical instrument reasonably well; so at a party,

guests amused each other. Above all, conversation was on art.Amusing

conversation could keep people happy for hours.

People played games like cricket and football. Most of them did not play very

well, but they managed to amuse themselves and their friends. Nowadays, we are

amused by professionals. Why listen to your friends when you can hear records of

great singers? Why read a detective story when you can see one on TV or at the

cinema? Why play with your friends when you can travel by train to see the greatest

players in the world or watch them on TV, sitting comfortably at home.

The art of conversation, reading and writing is dying. This can only harm the

individual because people are becoming lookers and listeners, instead of doers and

talkers. It is better to do something even though not very well, than to sit and watch

others doing it perfectly.

Answer:

Centuries ago, people were self-amused. They read and wrote novels, sequels in vivid detail. Ladies did a lot of needlework. Mob would talk, play cards, sing or do outdoor adventures for recreation. Art was a central topic of conversation. But nowadays, people pay to amuse themselves. Practise of talking, reading and playing with friends is slowly ebbing away. This is ultimately harming us by making us more spectators and less do-ers.
