The story is all about a prince and a swallow. The prince is called the happy prince as he was happy through out his life. He didnot know what tears meant for and sorrow was not allowed in his kingdom. But when he died the people placed his statue in the middle of the city from where he could see all uginess and misery of the city. Once a swallow flew over the city and rested on the feet of the happy prince statue, there tears fell on the swallow. First he thought it was raining but then realized that tears were rolling from the eyes of the happy prince. Then the king persuaded the swallow to perform certain tasks for him like the first to the streamstress house. the prince told the swallow to pluck the ruby and give it to the streamstress as she was extremely tired and her son was suffeeing with fever and had nothing to eat.next the prince told to give his one saphire to the young play writer as he couldnt complete his play due to cold and hunger. the prince thought that he could sell the saphire and buy some wood and food to eat. Then the prince saw the little matchgirl standing just below him. She let her matchsticks fall in the gutter because they were spoilt. the prince knew if she wouldnt bring money to her father then her father would hit her. So he gave the other sapphire. As the prince had given the 2 sapphires he has become blind. So the swallow couldnt leave the happy prince alone so he decided to stay back . As the cold was increasing day by day and the plan for swallow going to egypt is cancelled because the swallow cant leave the prince alone. The swallow died by falling in the prince shoulder. And the very next day when the mayor observed that the beauty of the prince statue is gone then they de decided to throw it. They melted the metal but the heart of the happy prince was made up of lead so it didnot melt and they threw it away along with the dead swallow. When god asked the 2 most precious things to the angel , the angel bought the leaden heart and the dead swallow as the sacrificed there life for the happiness of need and the poor.
