Start reading a lot of English, but subject to these criteria:
- Only spend time on works that you have a genuine interest in reading. Keeping your motivation high is crucial.
- Read works that are just on the edge of your ability. If it takes you an hour to read one page, it's probably too hard right now. Read things that allow you to understand the general idea, but that may require you to look up some words (say, up to 15% of them).
- After you finish reading, pause for a moment and ask yourself what the main points of the piece were. If you can't remember, then you didn't read carefully enough.
- Read quality writing. If you like news, I recommend The New York Times. If you prefer fiction, anything from the NYRB Classics series (that's New York Review of Books) is excellent.
- If you feel like reading a "serious" novel is out of your reach, don't be afraid to try children's literature. The Wind in the Willows and The Hobbit are excellent for all ages.
- If you really liked a particular article or story, then re-read it. This step is overlooked all too often, unfortunately.
- If reading a particular book starts to feel like an unhappy marriage, put it back on the shelf. It's better to move on to something you enjoy rather than force yourself to read something that you aren't interested in.
Happy reading!
