Are you quite sure he will be at home?”

said Jane, as they got off the Bus, she andMichael and Mary Poppins.

 

“Would my Uncle ask me to bring you totea if he intended to go out, I’d like toknow?”

 said Mary Poppins, who wasevidently very offended by the question.

She was wearing her blue coat with thesilver buttons and the blue hat to match, and on the days when she wore these itwas the easiest thing in the world tooffend her.

 

“Why is he called Mr Wigg — does he wearone?”

 asked Michael, hurrying alongbeside Mary Poppins.

 
“He is called Mr Wigg because Mr Wigg ishis name.

 And he doesn’t wear one.

 He isbald,” said Mary Poppins.

 “And if I haveany more questions we will just go BackHome.”

 And she sniffed her usual sniff ofdispleasure.

 

Jane and Michael looked at each other andfrowned.

 And the frown meant: “Don’t let’sask her anything else or we’ll never getthere.”

 

Mary Poppins put her hat straight at theTobacconist’s Shop at the corner.

 It hadone of those curious windows where thereseem to be three of you instead of one, sothat if you look long enough at them youbegin to feel you are not yourself but awhole crowd of somebody else.

 MaryPoppins sighed with pleasure, however, when she saw three of herself, eachwearing a blue coat with silver buttons anda blue hat to match.

 She thought it wassuch a lovely sight that she wished therehad been a dozen of her or even thirty.

The more Mary Poppinses the better.

 

“Come along,” she said sternly, as thoughthey had kept her waiting.

 Then theyturned the corner and pulled the bell ofNumber Three, Robertson Road.

 Jane andMichael could hear it faintly echoing froma long way away and they knew that in oneminute, or two at the most, they would behaving tea with Mary Poppins’ uncle, MrWigg, for the first time ever.

 

“If he’s in, of course,” Jane said to Michaelin a whisper.

 

At that moment the door flew open and athin, watery-looking lady appeared.

 

“Is he in?”

 said Michael quickly.

 

“I’ll thank you,” said Mary Poppins, givinghim a terrible glance, “to let me do thetalking.”

 

“How do you do, Mrs Wigg,” said Janepolitely.

 

“Mrs Wigg!”

 said the thin lady, in a voiceeven thinner than herself.

 “How dare youcall me Mrs Wigg?

 No, thank you!

 I’m plainMiss Persimmon and proud of it.

 Mrs Wiggindeed!”

 She seemed to be quite upset, and they thought Mr Wigg must be a veryodd person if Miss Persimmon was so gladnot to be Mrs Wigg.

 

“Straight up and first door on the landing,” said Miss Persimmon, and she wenthurrying away down the passage saying: “Mrs Wigg indeed!”

 to herself in a high, thin, outraged voice.

 

Jane and Michael followed Mary Poppinsupstairs.

 Mary Poppins knocked at thedoor.

 

“Come in!

 Come in!

 And welcome!”

 called aloud, cheery voice from inside.

 Jane’s heartwas pitter-pattering with excitement.

 

“He is in!”

 she signalled to Michael with alook.

 

Mary Poppins opened the door andpushed them in front of her.

 A large, cheerful room lay before them.

 At one endof it a fire was burning brightly and in thecentre stood an enormous table laid fortea — four cups and saucers, piles ofbread and butter, crumpets, coconut cakesand a large plum cake with pink icing.

 

“Well, this is indeed a Pleasure,” a hugevoice greeted them, and Jane and Michaellooked round for its owner.

 He wasnowhere to be seen.

 The room appearedto be quite empty.
