Answer: This note is based on discussions held in New Delhi at "Climbers Meet" at Indian Mountaineering Foundation and discussions during a seminar in Mumbai at the Himalayan Club. Both the organisation support these views.
Outdoor activities, specially for young people, are now being conducted by various organisations, both voluntarily and commercially. It is a worthwhile objective which introduces the young to the freedom of the hills and develops a life long interest in the wilderness.
However, if the programme for outdoor activities is not properly organised and well conducted by experienced leaders, it can cause enormous harm and inculcate a wrong approach to the hills. Moreover, if the treks and camps are organised to take the young to attitudes above 2500 m (8000 ft) and is an area away from the civilisation, special care must be taken and a different set of rules of safety should be applied.
The participants and their parent must be aware of the inherent nature of such programmes and must possess full details of the activities. Many times they are ignorant about the details and trust their wards to an organisation or group of persons not fully qualified to undertake such a programme. In 1998 at least two young persons lost their lives as the effects of high attitude problems were not understood in time resulting in no serious efforts being made to render help.
