Anthers are either removed or covered to prevent natural pollination.

Removal of anthers is known as emasculation of flower while covering the anther with a bag is called bagging.

Pollen grains of the flower of the desired plant are deposited on the stigma of the emasculated or bagged flower.

Such cross breeding between two plants by artificial pollination is called hybridisation and the varieties produced by this method are called hybrids.

New varieties of maize, rice and wheat have been developed by using artificial pollination method.
