The main idea of this incredible essay is to highlight the importance of downtime and being alone especially in accordance with a large group of people.

  • This essay was written in 1857. It begins with a poem describing a man who abandons his public life just to be alone. He also explains the details of his meet up with a humorist. He gives up his city life and starts living in pastures. Using this example the essayist explains how only smart people crave loneliness.  

  • But however, he agrees that complete solitude is not possible and one needs a balance between both public life and being alone.
