I once dreamt my best friend had come back. After junior year she moved back to the U.S. with her family despite herself wanting nothing but to stay in Norway. One day I got a text message from her saying she had good news to tell me. I waited for her reply but got nothing. Then right before class started I saw her walking down the hallway with her charming, goofy smile and as soon as I saw her I burst into my fastest sprint ever slamming her with a bear hug. I’m not usually the one that does this. One time I travelled for nearly a month and when I came back I heard a thump followed by the squeak of shoes running down the hall, heard a loud high pitched calling of my name then held on, chuckling as she jumped on my neck. She had apparently stopped mid conversation with a group and dropped her stuff to run to me. We had only known each other a semester at that point but we already felt inseparable. So when she came back the hole everyone felt was filled. The light coming from the windows didn’t seem blue and cold anymore, it felt warm and yellow. And everything felt just right.

After spending all day long helping her catch up and sadly having to tell her about how everyone was slowly falling into depression due to the exams and work and high college expectations, we decided to take a walk. We went through every single spot in town where we used to hang out. The little coffee shop with the best hot chocolate in the world. The bright Narvesen right in front of our shared bus stop. The backstreets of Vintage Town as we called it for its many little 2nd hand stores. The bench in front of the fish market. The little pond overlooking the town. And though they were all public places when we were there they felt ours. They felt special.

We kept going like this until at some point she said she had to go home. My heart skipped for a moment I frightfully asked “Home as in Maryland?” and she laughed and said no, that she had moved into a new place in town and she’d stay with us for senior year. I was overjoyed. She told me she’d text me tomorrow and we’d figure out something to do on saturday, maybe hang out. I thought whatever it was, it could literally just be us sitting on a sidewalk and I’d be happy.

Then I woke up. I checked my last messages with my friend on the phone. Nothing about moving back or good news. She was still in the U.S. and the light coming from my window was still blue and cold.

its the answer....
